The Napoli Underground project began in 2003, a logical evolution from more than thirty years of speleological activity in the artificial cavities beneath the city of Naples. A passion for urban speleology combined with a deep love of our city was the main reason for creating a web site to share our wide-ranging information about the fascinating history of the "sottosuolo" or underground of Naples.
Over the years the scope of the project expanded to include natural cave exploration, hiking outings into our endless historic ruins and naturalist areas which eventually progressed on into more demanding treks up and into wild and remote areas of our province of Campania and into neighboring regions.
Napoli Underground is not a formal or organized association at all. It is a rather loosely knit group sharing similar passions for exploration, discovery and documentation of the historic, archaeological and other natural wonders of Naples and its surrounding area.
In addition to exploration and documentation both above and below ground, Napoli Underground has close collaborative relations with other organizations, institutions and dedicated groups with whom we participate and share similar interests and passions.
Napoli Underground is open to anyone who shares our common interests and who may wish to contribute to our research, or those simply driven by curiosity who want to learn and participate in the informal outings which we have from time to time.
NOTE: Napoli underground is a small, private and independent organization exclusively dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of information and is not connected in any way with the many organizations engaged in tourism or guided tours of the city.
