The most ancient manmade underground cavity in Naples is found in the Poggioreale district. It is of Greek origin. On one of its tufa sandstone faces can still be seen some symbols carved into the tufa by Greek miners.
Archeologists have found the same signs on some of the tufa stones used to build the walls of the Greek city.
